Privacy
Mars Progress sets no cookies and needs no account, and the live numbers are worked out in your browser. We count visits with Rybbit, analytics software that runs on our own server.

What we collect
- Visit countsRybbit, open-source analytics that we run on our own server, records the page you view (with its title and any query string), the page that sent you, links you follow to other sites, your browser’s language and screen size, your browser, operating system and type of device, and an approximate location worked out from your IP address. It sets no cookies.[1] Session recording is switched off.
- Server logsThe site is served by Cloudflare, which handles each request, including your IP address, under its own privacy policy.[2]
- Your email address, if you sign up for the BriefWith the page you signed up on and the wording you agreed to. Brevo stores it and sends the Brief for us (see below).
- Email you send usMail to hello@marsprogress.com is stored in our Zoho Mail mailbox and used only to reply.[3]
- Nothing from the live toolsMars time, distances and countdowns are calculated in your browser; nothing about them is sent to us.
- Two settings in your browserIf you hide the “New here?” box on the home page, or pick a city on “Where is Mars tonight?”, your browser remembers that choice. It stays on your device. Rybbit’s script would also store a random ID in your browser; we block that, so analytics stores nothing on your device.
- Your location, only if you askOn “Where is Mars tonight?” you can tap “Use my location”. Your browser asks you first; the position is rounded to 0.1° and used only on that page, in your browser. It isn’t sent to us or stored.
- Pictures from NASARover pictures we don’t keep a copy of, such as the larger versions on the Mars photos page, load straight from NASA’s servers, so NASA receives your IP address under its own privacy policy.[7]
The Brief
The Brief is an email, usually once a month. Issues may include clearly labeled sponsored content or ads; advertisers never receive your address. When you sign up, Brevo, an email service run by Sendinblue SAS in Paris, France, sends you a link to confirm; you’re only on the list once you click it. Brevo stores your address and sends each issue for us; for this it acts as our data processor.[4] By default Brevo also records whether each subscriber opened an issue and which links they clicked.[6] Every issue has a one-click unsubscribe link, and we’ll delete your address if you ask.
